Seeds direct
from farmers
Writer error resulted in an incorrect assertion attributed to Tom
Stearns of High Mowing Seeds in the story Saving
our seeds: A network of organizations sets out to grow organic,
regionally-adapted crop seeds for the southeastern United States,
posted May 5, 2005.
Contrary to a miswritten quote in the story, Stearns actually emphasized
that Seeds of Change buys most of its own seed directly from farmers.
The figure is 85 percent bought from farmers during the past six
years, according to a Seeds of Change in a statement provided to
NewFarm.org. Further, the company says, “Seeds of Change supplies
all of the planting stock seed to these farmers. Over the same period
we have purchased the rest of our seed (15 percent) from Genesis
Seeds in Israel, a certified organic seed company comprised of 15
to 20 seed farmers.”
Writer Mark Schonbeck and NewFarm.org regret the error.
