Farm Description:
Welcome! After an amazing first season in 2006, we are at it again and can't wait to see all of our great customers again this May.
One Drop Farm is 3 acres of Farmer Andrew's ancestral farmland nestled in the Pennsylvania appalachians. It's been in the Mefferd family since 1929 when Andrew's great, great grandfather purchased the land. We grow a smorgasbord of veggies with a focus on growing in cooperation with the natural processes of earth and plant, improving the land as we go. We believe that you are what you digest, and the same goes for vegetables. The more diverse the soil, the more nutrients end up in the plants, and therefore, the food we eat. Nutritous soil = yummy, nutritious food. We are excited for the oportunity to bring our good stuff to you and your family.
Hope to see you at market.
Love and dirt,
Ann and Andrew Mefferd
Practices:
Cover crops and green manure crops are importance to One Drop farm. To feed the soil is to feed the people. We practice minimal till techniques to give the soil biota all the support they need to support the crops. We also have a unique system of farmscaping our acreage to encourage populations of natural predators (like parasitic wasps, lady beetles, and leatherwings) which in turn reduce populations of insects bent on eating the veggies before you do. Tens and tens of different kinds of flowering plants are aloud to bloom and give thier shelter, nectar and pollen to the winged workers of our farm. Additionally, in an effort to reduce our energy footprint, we produce biodiesel on our farm, a petroleum fuel alternative, to run our market truck and our tractor.
