Farm Description:
The park-like setting of South Fork Creek Organic Farms makes the Farm a memorable and educational experience for Students and Tourists! The previous Farm Owner worked to make the 160 Acre Organic Farm a harmonious place where Nature and Agriculture compliment each other. The Organic Farm has an established Contour Strip Cropping Rotation that uses Corn, Soybeans, Oats, Alfalfa, Clover, Buckwheat. Vegetables and Herbs. Rotating the Strips from Corn to Legumes allows Nutrient-Needy Crops to benefit from the Nitrogen added to the Soil by Legumes. This practice combines the beneficial effects of Contouring and Crop rotation. Crops are arranged so that a strip of meadow or small grain is alternated with a strip of Row Crop. Not more than half a Field can be planted to Row Crops. Meadow slows runoff, increases infiltration, traps sediment and provides surface cover. Ridges formed by Contoured Rows slow water flow which reduces Erosion. NATIVE PRAIRIE GRASS & PRAIRIE PLANTS The Farm has enrolled 20 acres in the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) as part of the LaMoine Watershed. The riparian areas are planted to native hardwoods and adjacent areas have been planted to native prairie plants and prairie grass. ORGANIC CERTIFICATION The farm has achieved organic certification from OCIA International - Organic Crop Improvement Association. OCIA International is one of the world's oldest, largest and most trusted leaders in the organic certification industry. A nonprofit, member-owned, agricultural organization, OCIA is dedicated to providing the highest quality organic certification services and access to global organic markets. As providers and consumers of certified organic products, we are committed to environmentally sound stewardship. The property is located 4 miles East of Golden, Illinois in Adams County, and is about 20 Miles East of Historic Quincy, Illinois and Hannibal, Missouri, best known as the boyhood home of the American author Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), who is better known as Mark Twain Some other famous citizens of Hannibal, just to name a few other than Mark Twain, include: The Unsinkable Molly Brown, who earned her name by surviving the sinking of the Titanic, was born in Hannibal, Missouri in 1867. Cliff Edwards was born in Hannibal in 1902. He was better known as Ukelele Ike, and is best remembered as the voice of Jiminy Cricket in the Walt Disney movie Pinocchio and for his recording of When You Wish Upon A Star from the same movie.
