Farm Description:
Grass Run Farm, located near Dorchester, Iowa, produces humanely- and sustainably-raised grass-finished beef, pastured veal, and pastured pork year-round on certified organic pasture. We believe in providing a quality life for our animals through rotational grazing, a nutritious winter hay program, and careful handling. We do not administer antibiotics, growth hormones, animal-protein supplements, or other health-compromising additives. Our meats have been praised for flavor, quality, and value by customers all over the country.
Practices:
We began building Grass Run Farm because we wanted to live closer to our necessities and help revitalize small-scale American agriculture. We firmly believe that the foods we eat should be wholesome, safe, and raised locally by environmentally sustainable methods. We monitor and encourage soil fertility naturally, use a wood-burning furnace to heat our home/barn/work shed, and feed with our draft team whenever we can.
We manage about 300 acres of certified organic pasture, tillable and woodlands with sustainability in mind. We use rotational grazing, diverse forages, and energy conservation measures to produce great meat and plan for our future in the larger scheme of regional food production.
Describe your product specialties and highlights:
We produce succulent grass-finished beef, pastured pork (with heritage genetics for superior flavor), and humanely-raised veal. Our veal calves get their milk from the cow - no crates here. We use a custom authentic recipe for our Italian sausage and offer nitrite-free bacon, classic Iowa chops, and other custome-order meats.

Call or e-mail us to order by the cut or in bulk. Information is available on our website: www.grassrunfarm.com. Customers who pre-order in quantity may specify their cuts, wrapping instructions, and delivery schedule (including staggered delivery). We ship extensively in Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin, and can ship further afield in dry ice.
We also deliver weekly (summer) and monthly (fall-winter-spring) to Decorah, Iowa. Our CSA includes monthly delivery/shipment of a mixed box of seasonal cuts, averaging $100 per box.
Our meats are served at La Rana Bistro in Decorah, Iowa, T-Bock's Pub in Decorah, The Vintage in Lanesboro, Minnesota, and Devotay in Iowa City, and we're currently developing relationships with several other fine restaurateurs!
Also, choose from a selection of our 100% grass-finished beef and pastured pork at Oneota Community Food Co-op in downtown Decorah, Iowa. Their recently expanded story (January 2008) features hundreds of local foods.
