Farm Description:
Brambleberry Farm was started on family land in 2003. Our farm is small, with 1.5 acres of growing beds, and 5+acres of pasture. We derive our living solely from the farm in the growing season, with part-time outside work in the winter months.
Practices:
Brambleberry Farm is a small permaculture-based CSA and market farm with about an acre-and-a-half of garden beds with a fledgling fruit-tree based "food-forest" cradling the northern arc. We use sheet mulch on our beds and do not till them--all tools used in the garden are simple hand-tools. Thus we have a great model that can be applied to smaller home gardens without use of gas-powered machinery. We are experimenting a little with mow-killed cover crops such as rye for a ready-mulched bed.
We manage a flock of 50 or so laying hens that contribute both eggs for sale and many chicken hours of work on the garden beds via movable pens and fences. We value these chickens almost as much for their serious work ethic as for their sellable products! We recently added a small drove of pastured hogs to our rotational grazing routine. These are American Guinea hogs, a rare breed that is smaller, friendlier and more adapted to foraging.
Our home systems utilize a variety of permaculture models, such as rainwater collection, greywater treatment wetland, composting toilets, and a passive-solar greenhouse in which we raise our own seedlings and cuttings. It also heats our home and provides some fresh foods for us in the winter.
Describe your product specialties and highlights:
We use permaculture-based growing methods to produce naturally-grown produce, fruits/berries, mushrooms, eggs, pork and nursery stock.
Where we sell our products:
Most sales are through a 15-share CSA which picks up from our farm. We also sell at the Orleans Farmers' Market, and at the Lost River Market and Deli in Paoli. Our growing season runs from March through November.
