Farm Description:
Our 112 acre organic "Oasis" sits in the center of the salad bowl of America which is the Salinas Valley. On this land, farmworkers seeking a healthier, more independent life are learning to become small organic farmers. We offer a 6-month "aprender-haciendo" beginning course followed by a 3-year land-lease program for personal experimentation and momentum building.
Practices:
Our fertility management includes annual covercropping on 50% of all acreage, plus liberal amendments of compost, and a diverse rotation of natural inputs. With a climate mostly adapted to greens and strawberries (June through September is never more than 70 degrees), we rotate crops within each season (often 4 different classes of vegetables each year). As a training center, we also encourage regular soil tests and experimentation with new techniques, resources, IPM, and labor as solutions to a myriad of "new farmer" challenges.
