Farm Description:
Flying Mule Farm is a small, diversified market garden and livestock operation in Auburn (in the heart of California's Gold Country). We farm vegetables on approximately 3 acres in Auburn. We also raise pastured chickens in Auburn and grassfed lambs in Colfax, California.
We use organic production methods, but we are not currently certified. We are moving toward using true horsepower (or mule power, in our case) in our vegetable operation - we are in the process of training a team of mules to use in tillage and cultivation. Our chickens are raised on pasture, and our grassfed lambs are produced in Colfax, where they are part of an integrated range and forest management system.
Practices:
We rotate our vegetable crops to maximize soil organic matter. We use winter cover crops and interplanting to reduce erosion, build organic matter, and fix nitrogen. We also utilize composted horse (and mule) manure in our vegetable operation. We also interplant attractant crops to attract beneficial insects.
Our livestock are used to convert some crop residues into manure, and to reduce weed and pest pressure. We are experimenting with using pastured chickens to reduce invasive weeds (like yellow starthistle) and goats and sheep to reduce brush and invasive weeds.
Describe your product specialties and highlights:
We raise several varieties of sweet corn, Calico popcorn, gourmet string beans, Middle Eastern cucumbers and gourmet summer squash.
Our chickens are available for pick up from the farm - customers can order whole fryers (4-5 pounds) or roasters (7-8 pounds).
Grassfed lamb is available seasonally - customers can order whole or half lambs or 12 pound variety boxes.
In the spring, we offer cut and potted flowers. During the fall and winter months, we partner with a farm in Colfax to offer Christmas trees, holiday greens and other seasonal products.
Where we sell our products:
Our products are available through Foothill Farmers Markets, directly at the farm, and through subscriptions. Call for prices and details!
