Farm Description:
The Farm was originally purchased in 1907 by my grandfather Jacamo Folchi. He began purchasing adjoining properties until 1938 when he had aquired about 3800 acres. The operation of the family farms was primarily dairy/livestock/hay. The property is located at 5000ft elevation in the northeastern part of California of the Sierra Nevada range. As the relatives began passing away the farms were being sold off in the 1970's & 80's. I was able to buy the last 65 acres in 1989. Currently we have 15 acres in native plant nursery, 6 acres of organic vegetables, and 45 acres of organic pasture/hay. What's unique about us is that we have only 60-75 frost free days per year, which allow us to raise winter vegetables in the summer for the Reno/Lake Tahoe markets.

Practices:
We have 3 solar greenhouses and one propagating house that is heated with a ground-source heat pump system that includes hydronics. Our water source is a connection of 3 wells and a solar pump feeding from a stock pond. Our irrigation is primarily drip/T-tape operation. We have converted 50+ yearold corrals into our vegetable fields. Our barnyard and native perennial grasses serve as our covercrops and we rotate our crops every 3 years and put one fallow every 5. With our nursey operation we bring in bees, and our perennials, and sunflower windbreaks/buffers bring in many beneficial insects.
