– Chief Executive Officer
The Rodale Institute®, located in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, is
seeking qualified candidates for the full-time position of Chief
Executive Officer (CEO). The CEO will implement policies set by
the Board of Directors; contribute to the development of annual
strategic goals and objectives; and provide leadership for financial,
program, facilities, human resources, and administrative management.
Guided by the philosophy of The Rodale Institute, the CEO will lead,
direct, and manage staff to achieve the Institute’s mission,
vision, and short-, intermediate-, and long-term goals.
The CEO reports to the Board of Directors of The Rodale Institute,
and will receive competitive compensation based on peer group standards,
experience, and professional achievement.
About The Rodale Institute
Founded by J. I. Rodale and continuing under the leadership of
the Rodale family, The Rodale Institute is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt
organization as defined by the IRS. It is committed to helping people
worldwide to achieve a regenerative food system that renews environmental
and human health with the philosophy that "Healthy Soil = Healthy
Food = Healthy People.” Weaving resilient connections between
soil, farming, food, personal health and community vitality has
been the central thrust of The Rodale Institute for more than three
generations. To achieve its goals of finding solutions to major
health and environmental problems, The Rodale Institute carries
out a uniquely integrated program of agricultural research, on-farm
demonstration, on- and off-site training, and global communication
through print and web-based media.
Duties
- Provide leadership and motivation for The Institute staff,
utilizing staff at the highest level possible in the organization’s
research, education, outreach, and operations units.
- Serve as The Rodale Institute’s primary spokesperson,
representing the Institute at local, state, national, and international
meetings.
- Work directly with the Board and Rodale family in development
and implementation of the Institute's dynamic vision.
- Oversee the daily operations of the organization—including
planning, programming, and human resources—and manage the
Institute’s financial and physical resources and facilities.
- Serve as the organization’s chief development and fundraising
officer with responsibility for establishing a strategic development
plan, overseeing fundraising operations.
- Obtain and execute contracts, grants, agreements and commitments
of, and on behalf of, the Institute as authorized by its Board
of Directors.
- Support the operations and administration of the Board by advising
and informing Board members, Rodale family, and staff regarding
current and emerging program, administrative, and strategic issues.
Qualifications Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to stimulate shared development and leadership
through delegation, staff empowerment, and unequivocal commitment
to equal opportunity and diversity.
- Ten (10) plus years’ leadership and management experience,
or committed involvement, in the nonprofit (preferred) or other
sectors in the areas of sustainable, organic agriculture, and
food systems.
- Strong background in marketing and sales of programs and initiatives.
Must be able to make written and front-line presentations to sustainable
and other agricultural organizations, corporations, government,
and international agencies.
- Knowledgeable and conversant with the science of organic agriculture
as well as the environmental and social processes central to translating
that science into practical use through education and outreach.
- International experience and relationships, especially Third
World in-country hands-on knowledge and experience.
- Experience and capability in government relations and policy
advocacy.
- Extensive experience in development and fundraising.
- Credibility with professionals from the scientific and farming
communities.
- Strong written and oral communication skills in dealing with
the media (print, radio, television), and federal, state, and
international policy makers.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively
with a variety of stakeholders.
- Willingness to travel when necessary for fundraising efforts,
relevant agricultural/scientific conferences, and other functions.
- Demonstrated outstanding leadership, planning, organizational,
and management skills and experience.
- Masters or doctoral degree preferred.
