Hard times
in coffee land
In addition to population pressure on land use, falling
coffee prices worldwide have made it impossible for many small farmers
to make a living growing coffee. Small-holder coffee grower Antonio Quic
shows a neighbor's land, where coffee has been taken out because of the
fall in prices and loss of income. The average coffee farmer gets less
than 1% of the price of a cup of coffee. Raising that to just 2% would
add only pennies to a cup of coffee, but double the incomes of small growers,
making it economically viable again.
