as reported by just-food.com: Animal rights groups
and Israeli geese are celebrating this week as a new law
was passed banning the force-feeding of geese.
The law, which will go into effect at the end of the
month, passed despite heavy resistance from government
officials, such as Agricultural ministry director general
Yossi Yishay, who feel the law will ruin an important
sector of Israeli agriculture. Israel is one of world’s
largest exporters of foie gras, a pâté
made from goose liver.
Israel’s foie gras industry brings in US$16.5m
annually and employs 500 people throughout the country.
Israel is currently the world's fourth largest exporter
of foie gras.
