17, 2005: Biofuels such as ethanol are definitely
cleaner burning than fossil fuels but it the process of
getting the fuel to the car that has UK lobby groups concerned.
"At the consumption end ethanol is much, much
cleaner than fossil fuels," David Santillo, senior
scientist at Greenpeace's research laboratory at Exeter
University in England, told Reuters. "But looking
at emissions at the outset, it really depends on how
the ethanol is produced."
Environmental costs of biofuels can include the pesticides
and fertilizers used to grow the crops, transportation
fuels and processing emissions.
