| November 3, 2004,
as reported by just-food.com: French scientists
fear they may have the first case of BSE in a non-bovine
livestock. A recently deceased goat is suspected of having
been infected with the brain-wasting virus.
A section of its brain has been sent to European Union’s
senior laboratory, in Weybridge, England for conclusive
testing. Depending on the panel’s report, the
European Food Safety Authority will be asked to update
EU risk controls for goats.
On its own, the case presents no health risk as it
was an isolated case and the goat and its herd have
not been slaughtered for food.
