| November 10, 2004, as reported
by just-food.com: Russia has limited its beef options as
various disease out-breaks around the world have caused the country
to issue several import bans.
Russia’s Agriculture Ministry has announced it is imposing
a ban on cattle, animal products and animal feed from Peru due to
concerns over foot and mouth disease (FMD). Russia has also issued
a ban on imports of cattle and sheep and their meat and meat products
from the Andalucia and Extremadura provinces in Spain over bluetongue
virus according to a Rueters report.
The EU announced in mid-October that it had restricted exports
of cattle and sheep from some southern Spanish provinces after detecting
bluetongue virus in a number of sentinel cattle in the Municipality
of Jimena de la Frontera in the Province of Cadiz, on 13 October.
Bluetongue is an easy-spreading viral disease of domestic and wild
ruminants transmitted by insects. It is not known to affect humans.
