WARSAW, Poland,
March 23, 2005: Poland has decided to seek permission
for a two year ban on the import and planting of 17 varieties
of genetically modified (GMO) maize seed made by Monsanto.
Poland must first submit and receive petition from the
European Commission to ban parent seed MON 810, a gm-variety
recently approved for cultivation by the European Union.
Polish officials hope to have an answer to their request
within the next two months.
