Barbara Ramirez, 77: My mother died when I was very young. I was raised by my father. I went to work for a family tortillando. I married and had nine children, five died as babies or youngsters - from diarreah, flu. We worked on the coffee plantations. We were paid four pounds of corn for a day's work. (Corn cost 3-4 centavos per pound then.) We would carry water from the lake to houses a kilometer away. For several trips we would be paid two tortillas.
