17, 2005: Stonyfield Farm, known mainly for
their natural and organic yogurts, is entering the fast
food business with O’Naturals, a healthy alternative
for eaters on-the-go. According to a recent story in
the Chicago Tribune, the idea was dreamed up by Stonyfield
president, Gary Hirshberg after a family vacation and
a lack of healthy eating options. "We call it `fast
food with a mission,'" Hirshberg is quoted as saying
in story.
The emerging chain offers a variety of nutritional
options, most made from natural or organic ingredients.
Items listed on the menu include free-range chicken,
artisan cheeses and organic mixed green salads. Currently
all stores are located in the northeast but the company
hopes to expand across the U.S. using a franchise system.
