report by ENN: Farmers have two options in marketing their
farm practices conventional or certified organic. Growers in California
feel these black and white marketing practices do not accurately reflect
the grays that exist in the field and are lobbying to get a sustainable
label approved.
The sustainable label, supported by environmentalists, farmers
and some public officials, would require farmers to meet soil management,
water quality, wildlife protection and labor practices, as well
as pesticide use requirements. Advocates argue it will give environmentally
conscious consumers a more affordable alternative to organic. MORE> |
